چکیده

It is well established that the oxygen consumption of various types of intact cells is augmented when low concentrations of 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) or certain ot!her substituted phenols are added to the medium in which the cells are suspended. Slightly higher concentrations depress oxygen consumption. This has been shown for yeast (l-6), luminous bacteria (7), various marine eggs (S-14), orthopteran embryos (15), mammalian sperm (16-19), and several amphibian (20) and mammalian (21-25) tissues. Similar observations have been reported in some studies on glycolysis (cf. (26)). The augmentation phase of the concentration-action curves (cf. (27)) which depict the effect of graded concentrations of DNP (and certain other substituted phenols) on oxygen consumption appears to depend upon factors associated with cell structure or rendered inactive by dilution (cf. (28)), because it has not been observed in cytolyzed material (29) or in cell-free preparations of various enzymes directly concerned in cell respiration (13, 30-32). Recently Reiner (33) has described a rat brain homogenate, reinforced with the known co-factors of glycolysis and with nicotinamide, cyt, ochrome c, and fumamte, which is capable of oxidizing glucose. Moreover Reiner has defined the conditions for maximum activity in this system. In order t,o obt,ain further information regarding the action of the substituted phenols in augmenting cell respirat.ion, which is still imperfectly understood (26, 34, 35), we have compared the influence of graded concentrations of DNP on the oxygen consumption of rat brain slices and homogenates with glucose as the fuel in each case. The results are presented in this paper.

Comparative study of efficiency between 2,4 dinitrophenol removal using dry sludge and modified calcium chloride

Background and Objective: 2,4 dinitrophenol is observed in sewage produced from chemical and petrochemical industries. Contamination of drinking water with these pollutants causes toxicity, health problems and change in taste and odor. The present study was developed to evaluate the efficiency of removal 2,4-DNP through dried sludge adsorbent and modified calcium chloride sludge adsorbent. M...

Study on the Application of Cucurbit[6]uril as a Nanoporous Adsorbent for the Removal of 2,4-Dinitrophenol from Wastewaters

In the present study, cucurbit[6]uril was used as a nonporous adsorbent for the removal of 2,4-dinitrophenol from aqueous solutions. The experiments were carried out in a batch system to optimize operation variables such as pH of solution, contact time, adsorbent dose and salt concentration. Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin isotherms were applied for the explanation of experimental data. The hi...

Water uptake and energy metabolism in brain slices from the rat.

1. Exchange of (3)H(2)O with H(2)O takes place rapidly in incubated rat brain slices but at a lower rate in slices from infant brain than from adult brain. The temperature coefficient (Q(10)) of the exchange process, between 37 and 4 degrees C, is 1.76 with infant brain and 1.26 with adult brain. The exchange process is unaffected by the presence of ouabain or 2,4-dinitrophenol. 2. An approxima...

Evaluation of Baffle Fixes Film up Flow Sludge Blanket Filtration (BFUSBF) System in Treatment of Wastewaters from Phenol and 2,4-Dinitrophenol Using Daphnia Magna Bioassay

Background: Phenol and nitrophenol are common compounds found in different types of industrial wastewater known as serious threats to human health and natural environment. In this study, Daphnia magna was used to evaluate the effectiveness of "baffle fixes film up flow sludge blanket filtration" (BFUSBF) system in elimination of phenolic compounds from water. Methods: D. magna cult...

Effects of 2,4-dinitrophenol amylobarbitone and certain other drugs on the rate of oxygen consumption and force of contraction of isolated curarized diaphragm muscle of the rat.

1 A technique has been developed for studying over periods of 10 min or longer the effects of drugs on both the force of electrically-induced contractions and the oxygen consumption of an isolated, curarized, mammalian, skeletal muscle preparation.2 The resting oxygen consumption of the muscle was increased substantially by 2,4-dinitrophenol in concentrations (0.02 mM and higher) that eventuall...
